Intellectual Humility: Research, Theory, and Implications for Skepticism

Scott O. Lilienfeld is Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Psychology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his A.B. at Cornell University in 1982 and his Ph.D. in psychology (clinical) from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He is editor of the journal Clinical Psychological Science and recent past president of the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology. Dr. Lilienfeld is a Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (CSI) Fellow and member of the CSI Executive Council. He is also a consulting editor for, regular contributor to, Skeptical Inquirer magazine.

His primary areas of research include personality disorders, individual differences in cognitive biases, psychological misconceptions, and the relevance of scientific thinking to psychology. Dr. Lilienfeld has authored, co-authored, and co-edited over a dozen books, including 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology (John Wiley & Sons, 2010) and Facts and Fictions in Mental Health (John Wiley & Sons, 2017).

There will be a potluck lunch starting at noon before this meeting.

AFS generally meets at noon for socializing, and the talk starts at 1:00. Atlanta Freethought Society was founded in 1985, which makes it one of Metro Atlanta’s oldest secular societies. The facility is wheelchair accessible. Atlanta Freethought Hall is a former Primitive Baptist Church, built in 1866, and is also the meeting place for Fellowship of Reason, Freedom of Religion Foundation of Atlanta, as well as other organizations. We rent the building at reasonable rates. If you would like to rent the hall for an organization meeting, a party, a wedding, etc., please contact an AFS Board Member.
