For our October meeting, John will continue to probe the question of whether Jesus historically existed that we explored last month with Dr. Richard Carrier. No contemporary evidence of Jesus’ existence has been found; what we do have was written decades later and survives in copies edited over centuries. With so little to go on, the idea that Jesus was a myth split into many competing theories. John ran a deep stylometric analysis of how the stories that became the Gospels were written using the best evidence for who the writers were, which passages were added later, and which layers are oldest. He then tested each mythicist hypothesis against that evidence, and found one clear result…
